ENIAC

In 1946 the first United Nations General Assembly meeting took place in London, the U.S. Army made first radar contact with the moon and one of the first automatic digital computers, ENIAC, was booted up at the University of Pennsylvania. It’s no surprise that 1946 also marks the year that the first Mensa meeting took place. Mensa started as the brainchild (pardon the pun) of Lionel Ware and Roland Berill. Since that day in October 1946, the organization has grown to include 50 national chapters worldwide. American Mensa is the largest international chapter and comprises 130 Local Groups across the United States.

Did you know?

The word mensa means "table" in Latin; similarly, mens means "mind" and mensis means "month." The name "Mensa" is reminiscent of "mind, table, month," which suggests a monthly meeting of great minds around a table. Strangely enough it also means “dumb female” in Spanish.

We appreciate the irony.
